Arsenal Extends Lead at Top of Table with Win Over Wolves
Two First-Half Goals Prove Decisive
LONDON, England (AP) - Arsenal survived a late scare against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table. Goals from Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli in the first half were enough to secure a 2-1 victory for the Gunners, who now hold a four-point cushion over second-placed Manchester City.
Arsenal dominated the opening stages of the match and took the lead in the 35th minute. Odegaard exchanged passes with Bukayo Saka before curling a delightful shot into the top corner. The Norwegian midfielder's goal was his ninth of the season and moved him level with Erling Haaland as the league's top scorer.
Arsenal doubled their advantage just seven minutes later. Martinelli latched onto a through ball from Thomas Partey and slotted it past Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa. The Brazilian forward's goal was his seventh of the campaign.
Wolves came out with renewed determination in the second half and pulled a goal back through Hwang Hee-chan in the 68th minute. The South Korean forward's strike set up a tense finale, but Arsenal held on to secure the three points.
The win extends Arsenal's unbeaten run to 14 matches in all competitions. The Gunners will now turn their attention to their Champions League clash against Barcelona on Tuesday.
