Auburn coach Hugh Freeze spent 24 minutes speaking with reporters ahead of the Tigers trip to California. He was generally satisfied with many aspects of his team's performance in their season-opening win over UMass, but he also knows there are areas where they need to improve.
One area that Freeze was particularly pleased with was the play of his defense. The Tigers held UMass to just 14 points and forced three turnovers. Freeze said he was impressed with the way his players were able to adjust to the different schemes that UMass ran.
Another area that Freeze was happy with was the play of his running backs. Tank Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter combined for 234 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Freeze said he likes the depth that he has at the running back position and he thinks they can be a strength for the Tigers this season.
However, Freeze did say that there are some areas where the Tigers need to improve. He said he would like to see his team be more consistent on offense. The Tigers had several drives stall in UMass territory and they also had a couple of turnovers.
Freeze also said he would like to see his team be more disciplined. The Tigers had 10 penalties for 75 yards against UMass. Freeze said that is something that they need to clean up if they want to be successful this season.
Overall, Freeze was pleased with the Tigers' performance in their season-opening win. He knows that there are some areas where they need to improve, but he is confident that they can be a successful team this season.
